Airline Lunches

I put my carry-on in the luggage compartment and sat down in my assigned seat. It was going to be a long flight to Delhi.
'I'm glad I have a good book to read Perhaps I will get a short sleep,' I thought.

Just before take-off, a line of soldiers came down the aisle and filled all the vacant seats, totally surrounding me. I decided to start a conversation.
'Where are you guys headed?' I asked the Young man seated nearest to me. "Agra. We'll be there for two weeks for special training, and then we're being deployed for operations."

After flying for about an hour, an announcement was made that lunches were available on payment. It would be several hours before we reached Delhi , and I quickly decided a lunch would help pass the time..

As I reached for my wallet, I overheard a soldier ask his buddy if he planned to buy lunch. 'No, that cost a lot of money, probably wouldn't be worth it. I'll wait till we get to Delhi ...."
His buddy agreed.

I looked around at the other soldiers. None were buying lunch. I walked to the back of the plane and handed the flight attendant enough money to cover for 10 lunches and told her 'Take a lunch to all those soldiers..'
She grabbed my arms and squeezed tightly. Her eyes wet with tears, she thanked me. 'My young brother was a soldier in Kargil , it's almost like you are doing it for him..'

Picking up ten lunchboxes, she headed up the aisle to where the boys were seated.
She stopped at my seat and asked, 'Which do you like best - Veg or chicken?'
'Chicken,' I replied, wondering why she asked..

She turned and went to the front of plane, returning a minute later with a dinner plate from first class. "This is your thanks".

After we finished eating, I went again to the back of the plane, heading for the rest room. An old man stopped me. 'I saw what you did. I want to be part of it. Here, take this.' He handed me a Rs 500/- note.
Soon after I returned to my seat,

I saw the Captain coming down the aisle, looking at the aisle numbers as he walked, I hoped he wasn't looking for me, but noticed he was looking at the numbers only on my side of the plane. When he got to my row he stopped, smiled, held out his hand, and said, 'I want to shake your hand.'
Quickly unfastening my seat-belt I stood and took the Captain's hand. With a booming voice he said, 'I was an Air Force pilot a long time back. Once someone bought me lunch. It was an act of kindness I never forgot.' I was embarrassed when applause was heard from all of the passengers.

Later I walked to the front of the plane so I could stretch my legs. A kid who looked about 18 was sitting about six rows in front of me reached out his hand, wanting to shake mine. I felt him stick a currency note in my palm.

When we landed I gathered my belongings and started to depart. Waiting just inside the aeroplane door was a man who stopped me, put something in my shirt pocket, turned, and walked away without saying a word.
Another currency note !

Upon entering the terminal, I saw the soldiers gathering for their Trip up to their training area.. I walked over to them and handed them all the currency notes that was given to me on the flight and said. 'It will take you some time to reach your training area. It will be about time for a sandwich. May God Bless You.' and thank you for doing whatever you do.

Ten young men of honour left that flight feeling the love and respect of their fellow countrymen. As I walked briskly to my car, I whispered a prayer for their safe return. These soldiers were giving their all for our country. I could only give them a couple of meals.
It seemed so little...

A Serviceman is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank cheque made payable to ' India ' for an amount of 'up to and including my life.'

That is Honour, and there are way too many people in this country who don't understand it..........

''മാഷേ... ഭാര്യ ഗര്‍ഭിണിയായി. കുറെ കഴിഞ്ഞിട്ട് മതിയെന്ന് ഞങ്ങൾ നിശ്ചയിച്ചതാണ്. പക്ഷേ എവിടെയോ പാളി..മെഡിസിനും വിശ്വസിക്കാന്‍ പറ്റാതായി....."

എനിക്ക്‌ എന്നും ഉപദേശം തന്നിരുന്ന മാഷോട്‌ ഞാൻ കാര്യം പറഞ്ഞു.

മാഷ് കുറേനേരം എന്നെത്തന്നെ നോക്കി......

ഞാൻ സൂചിപ്പിച്ചു:
"ഇത്‌ ആറാം മാസമാണ്. എനിക്ക്‌ എന്തായാലും ലീവ്‌ പറ്റില്ല. അപ്പോൾ അവള്‍ ഒറ്റയ്ക്ക്?''

മാഷ് പരിഹാരം പറഞ്ഞുതുടങ്ങി:

"സുധാകരാ...പേടിക്കണ്ട; ഒരു പാക്കേജുണ്ട്. ഏഴാം മാസത്തില്‍ അഡ്മിറ്റാക്കാം. പ്രസവാനന്തര ചികിത്സയും കഴിഞ്ഞ് വീട്ടില്‍ എത്തിക്കും........അഡ്രസ്സും ഫോണ്‍നമ്പറും എഴുതിയെടുത്തോളൂ.... "

മാഷോട്‌ നന്ദിയും യാത്രയും ഒരുമിച്ചു പറഞ്ഞു ഞാൻ തിരിഞ്ഞുനടന്നു...

"മൂന്ന് വയസ്സുവരെ കുട്ടിയെ നോക്കുന്ന പാക്കേജുണ്ട്. രാവിലെ വരും വൈകീട്ടു പോകും....ഫുള്‍ടൈം വേണമെന്നുണ്ടെങ്കില്‍ പാക്കേജിന്റെ സ്വഭാവം മാറും.....ഫോൺ നമ്പർ എഴുതിക്കോളൂ"

സന്തോഷമായി; ഞാൻ പോന്നു.

മാഷ് ചെറുചിരിയോടെ പറഞ്ഞു:

''ഇത്തിരി വലിയ പാക്കേജാണ്. ഡേകെയര്‍ മുതൽ.. നല്ല ഡിഗ്രിയെടുത്ത് കൈയില്‍ തരും. കുട്ടിയെ മാസത്തിലൊരിക്കല്‍ വേണമെങ്കില്‍ ചെന്നുകാണാം...."

എന്തു നല്ല മാഷ്‌!! അഡ്രസ്സും വാങ്ങി ഞാനിറങ്ങി.....

മാഷിനെ അന്വേഷിച്ച്‌ ഒരു യുവാവ്‌ വന്നു....

മാഷിന്റെ കാഴ്ച്ചക്ക്‌ മങ്ങലേറ്റിട്ടുണ്ട്‌. ഓർമ്മശേഷിയും കുറവ്‌. കേട്ട് സാമ്യമുള്ള ശബ്ദമായതിനാൽ മാഷ്‌ തിരിച്ചറിഞ്ഞു.

"സുധാകരന്റെ മോൻ.....ല്ലേ...?"

"അതേ.....പപ്പ മാഷിനെക്കുറിച്ച് പറയാറുണ്ട്...."

മകൻ ബാക്കി കാര്യം പറഞ്ഞു:
"പപ്പയ്ക്കും മമ്മിക്കും വല്ലാത്ത ഓർമ്മക്കുറവ്, ഓവർ സംസാരം. കുട്ടികളുടെതു പോലെ പിടിവാശി, വയസ്സ്‌ ഒത്തിരിയായില്ലേ...."

മകൻ തുടർന്നു.
"എനിക്ക്‌ തീരെ സമയമില്ല. വൈഫിനാണെങ്കിൽ ജോലിയും...പിന്നെ അവൾ ഇതൊക്കെ അഡ്ജസ്റ്റ് ചെയ്തുപോകുന്ന പ്രകൃതവുമല്ല.."

മാഷിന് കാര്യം ബോധ്യമായി.

മാഷ്‌ പരിഹാരം പറഞ്ഞുതുടങ്ങി:

"...നല്ല പരിചരണത്തോടെ നോക്കുന്ന ഒരു പാക്കേജുണ്ട്. മരിച്ചാല്‍ അതാത് മതപ്രകാരം സംസ്‌കരിക്കുകയും ചെയ്യും. സാധാരണ വൃദ്ധസധനമല്ല..."

ഒരു രാത്രി മുഴുവൻ അതായത് ഏകദേശം 12 മണിക്കൂർ വെള്ളത്തിൽ കിടക്കുന്ന ചോറിൽ ലാക്റ്റിക് ആസിഡ് എന്ന ബാക്ടീരിയ പ്രവർത്തിച്ച് ചോറിലെ പൊട്ടാസ്യം, അയേൺ തുടങ്ങിയ ഘടകങ്ങളെ ഇരട്ടിയായി വർദ്ധിപ്പിക്കുന്നു. 100 ഗ്രാം ചോറിൽ അടങ്ങിയിരിക്കുന്ന 3.4 മില്ലിഗ്രാം അയേൺ 73.91 മില്ലീഗ്രമായി വർദ്ധിക്കുന്നു. എല്ലുകളുടെ ബലം വർദ്ധിക്കാൻ ഇത് ഏറെ സഹായിക്കുന്നു. മറ്റ് ഭക്ഷണ പദാർത്ഥങ്ങളിൽ നിന്നും ലഭിക്കാൻ സാധ്യതയില്ലാത്ത ബി6, ബി12 വൈറ്റമിനുകൾ പഴങ്കഞ്ഞിയിൽ നിന്നും ധാരാളമായി ലഭിക്കുന്നു. ആരോഗ്യദായകമായ ബാക്ടീരിയകൾ ശരീരത്തിൽ ഉല്പാദിപ്പിക്കാൻ പഴങ്കഞ്ഞിക്ക് കഴിയും.

സ്കൂള്‍ വിട്ടു വന്നശേഷം സന്ധ്യയാകും വരെ പറമ്പിലും,മൈതാനത്തും,വയലേലകളിലും കൂട്ടുകാര്‍ക്കൊപ്പം കളിക്കുമായിരുന്നു. 

ഞങ്ങള്‍ യാഥാര്‍ത്ഥ സ്നേഹിതര്‍ക്കൊപ്പമായിരുന്നു കളിച്ചിരുന്നത്. Net friends ഇല്ലായിരുന്നു. 

ഞങ്ങള്‍ക്ക് ദാഹിക്കുമ്പോള്‍ ഏതെങ്കിലും കിണറ്റിന്‍ കരയില്‍ ചെന്ന് വെള്ളം കോരിക്കുടിക്കുമായിരുന്നു. അതായിരുന്നു safe. കുപ്പിവെള്ളം ഞങ്ങള്‍ കണ്ടിട്ടില്ല. 

ഞങ്ങള്‍ ഒരു ഐസ്ക്രീം ,അരിയുണ്ട,അല്ലെങ്കില്‍ പലഹാരം നാലുപേര്‍ ഷെയര്‍ ചെയ്ത് കഴിക്കുമായിരുന്നു. ഒരു കരിമ്പ് നാലുപേര്‍ കടിച്ചു തിന്നുമായിരുന്നു..ആര്‍ക്കും infection ,അസുഖം ഒന്നും വന്നിട്ടില്ല. 

ഞങ്ങള്‍ വയറുനിറയെ മൂന്നു നാലുനേരം ആഹാരം കഴിച്ചിട്ടും ആരും പൊണ്ണത്തടിയന്മാര്‍ ആയിട്ടില്ല. 

ചെരുപ്പിടാതെ ഊരെല്ലാം ചുറ്റിയിട്ടും ഞങ്ങള്‍ക്ക് അസുഖം ഒന്നും വന്നിട്ടില്ല. 

ഞങ്ങള്‍ ദിനചര്യകള്‍ തെറ്റിച്ചാലും healthy ആയിരുന്നു. 

എത്ര മഴ നനഞ്ഞാലും,വെയില്‍ കൊണ്ടാലും ഞങ്ങള്‍ക്ക് പനി വരില്ലായിരുന്നു.ഞങ്ങള്‍ 
കളിപ്പാട്ടങ്ങള്‍ സ്വയം ഉണ്ടാക്കി കളിക്കുകയായിരുന്നു. പന്തുവരെ. 

ഞങ്ങള്‍ അച്ഛനമ്മമാരുടെ പൂര്‍ണ്ണ നിയന്ത്രണത്തിലും നിരീക്ഷണത്തിലുമാണ് കഴിഞ്ഞത്. 

വല്ലപ്പോഴും ഞങ്ങള്‍ അസുഖം വരുമ്പോള്‍ ആശുപ ത്രിയില്‍ പോകുമായിരുന്നു.തൊട്ടതിനും പിടിച്ചതിനും ഇന്നത്തെപ്പോലെ പോകുമായിരുന്നില്ല. 

ഞങ്ങള്‍ക്ക് അന്ന് മൊബൈല്‍,DVD, Play station, X boxes, Internet,PC, chatting ഒന്നുമില്ലായിരുന്നു.ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നത് യഥാര്‍ത്ഥ സുഹൃത്തുക്കള്‍ മാത്രം. 

ഞങ്ങള്‍ സുഹൃത്തുക്കളുടെ വീടുകളില്‍ അവര്‍ വിളിക്കാതെ തന്നെ കടന്നു ചെല്ലുമായിരുന്നു. അവര്‍ക്കൊപ്പമിരുന്നു ഭക്ഷണം കഴിച്ചു മടങ്ങുമായിരുന്നു.അവരെ മുന്‍കൂട്ടി വിളിച്ചു Appointment എടുക്കാറില്ലായിരുന്നു. 

അതോരവിസ്മരണീയ കാലഘട്ടമായിരുന്നു.ആ ഒരു കാലം ഇനിയുണ്ടാകുമോ??

The miracle

An eight-year-old child heard her parents talking about her little brother. All she knew was that he was very sick and they had no money left. They were moving to a smaller house because they could not afford to stay in the present house after paying the doctor's bills. Only a very costly surgery could save him now and there was no one to loan them the money.

When she heard her daddy say to her tearful mother with whispered desperation, 'Only a miracle can save him now', the little girl went to her bedroom and pulled her piggy bank from its hiding place in the closet. She poured all the change out on the floor and counted it carefully.

Clutching the precious piggy bank tightly, she slipped out the back door and made her way six blocks to the local drugstore. She took a quarter from her bank and placed it on the glass counter.

"And what do you want?" asked the pharmacist.

"It's for my little brother," the girl answered back. "He's really very sick and I want to buy a miracle."

"I beg your pardon?" said the pharmacist.

"His name is Andrew and he has something bad growing inside his head and my daddy says only a miracle can save him. So how much does a miracle cost?"

"We don't sell miracles here, child. I'm sorry," the pharmacist said, smiling sadly at the little girl.

"Listen, I have the money to pay for it. If it isn't enough, I can try and get some more. Just tell me how much it costs."

In the shop was a well-dressed customer. He stooped down and asked the little girl, "What kind of a miracle does you brother need?"

"I don't know," she replied with her eyes welling up. "He's really sick and mommy says he needs an operation. But my daddy can't pay for it, so I have brought my savings".

"How much do you have?" asked the man.

"One dollar and eleven cents; but I can try and get some more", she answered barely audibly.

"Well, what a coincidence," smiled the man, "A dollar and eleven cents - the exact price of a miracle for little brothers."

He took her money in one hand and held her hand with the other. He said, "Take me to where you live. I want to see your brother and meet your parents. Let's see if I have the kind of miracle you need."

That well-dressed man was Dr Carlton Armstrong, a neurosurgeon. The operation was completed without charge and it wasn't long before Andrew was home again and doing well.

"That surgery," her mom whispered, "was a real miracle. I wonder how much it would have cost."

The little girl smiled. She knew exactly how much the miracle cost ... one dollar and eleven cents ... plus the faith of a little child.

Perseverance can make miracles happen! Miracle can come in various forms - as a doctor, as a lawyer, as a teacher, as a police ,as a friend, as a stranger and many others..

A river cuts the rock not because of its power, but because of its consistency.

Consider a situation: You're eating breakfast with your family. Your daughter knocks over a cup of coffee onto your business shirt. You harshly scold your daughter for knocking the coffee cup over. She breaks down in tears.
After scolding her, you turn to your wife and criticize her for placing the cup too close to the edge of the table.
A short verbal battle follows. You storm upstairs and change your shirt. Back downstairs you find your daughter has been too busy crying to finish breakfast and get ready for school.
She misses the bus. Your wife must leave immediately for work.You rush to the car and drive your daughter to school.
Because you are late, you drive 80 km an hour in a 60 kmph speed limit. After a 15 minute delay and throwing Rs.500 (traffic fine) away, you arrived at school.

Your daughter runs to the building without saying good-bye. After arriving at the office 20 minutes late, you find you forgot your briefcase.
Your day has started terrible. As it continues, it seems to get worse and worse. You look forward to going home. When you arrive home you find a small wedge in your relationship with your wife and daughter. Why?
Because of how you reacted in the morning.

Why did you have a bad day?
A) Did the coffee cause it?
B) Did your daughter cause it?
C) Did the policeman cause it?
D) Did you cause it?

The answer is D.

You had no control over what happened with the coffee. How you reacted in those 5 seconds is what caused your bad day.
Here is what could have and should have happened.

Coffee splashes over you. Your daughter is about to cry.You gently say "It's OK honey, you just need to be more careful next time".
Grabbing a towel you rush upstairs. After grabbing a new shirt and your briefcase. You come back down in time look through the window and see your child getting on the bus. She turns and waves.
You and your wife say bye before you both go to work. You arrive 5 minutes early and cheerfully greet the staff. Your boss comments on how good a day you are having.
Notice the difference. Two different scenarios. Both started the same. Both ended different. Why?
Because of how you REACTED. You really do not have any control over 10% of what happens. The other 90% is determined by your reaction.

Here are some ways to apply the 90/10 secret:

If someone says something negative about you, do not be a sponge. Let the attack roll off like water on glass.
You don't have to let the negative comment affect you! React properly and it will not ruin your day.
A wrong reaction could result in losing a friend, being fired, getting stressed out, etc.

How do you react if someone cuts you off in traffic?
Do you lose your temper? Pound the steering wheel till it fall off?
Do you curse?
Does your blood pressure skyrocket?
Do you try and bump them? WHO CARES if you arrive ten seconds later at work?
Why let the blue car ruin your drive.

Remember the 90-10 principle, and do not worry about it! You are told you lost your job. Why lose sleep or get irritated? It will work out. Use your worrying" energy and time into finding another job.
The plane is late. It is going to mangle your schedule for the day. Why take out your frustration on the flight attendant?
She has no control over what is going on. Use your time to study, get to know the other passengers, etc. Why get stressed out? It will just make things worse.

Now you know the 90-10 secret. Apply it and you will be amazed at the results."

born. When she heard the news
she was devastated.

There is an ancient story....
A man who has gone out of his town comes back and finds that his house is on fire. It was one of the most beautiful houses in the town, and the man loved the house. Many people were ready to give double price for the house, but he had never agreed for any price, and now it is just burning before his eyes. And thousands of people have gathered, but nothing can be done.
The fire has spread so far that even if you try to put it out, nothing will be saved. So he becomes very sad. His son comes running, and whispers something in his ear: "Don't be worried. I sold it yesterday, and at a very good price ― three times.... The offer was so good I could not wait for you. Forgive me."

But the father said, "Good, if you have sold it for three times more than the original price of the house." Then the father is also a watcher, with other watchers.

Just a moment before he was not a watcher, he was identified. It is the same house, the same fire, everything is the same. but now he is not concerned. He is enjoying it just as everybody else is enjoying.

Then the second son comes running, and he says to the father, "What are you doing? You are smiling ― and the house is on fire?"
The father said, "Don't you know, your brother has sold it."

He said, "He had talked about selling it, but nothing has been settled yet, and the man is not going to purchase it now." Again, everything changes. Tears which had disappeared, have come back to the father's eyes, his smile is no more there, his heart is beating fast. But the watcher is gone.
He is again identified.

And I am going to pay the price that I have settled for. Neither you knew, nor I knew that the house would catch on fire.'" Again the father is a watcher. The identity is no more there.

Actually nothing is changing; just the idea that "I am the owner, I am identified somehow with the house," makes the whole difference. The next moment he feels, "I am not identified. Somebody else has purchased it,
I have nothing to do with it; let the house burn."
This simple methodology of watching the mind, that you have nothing to do with it....

Most of its thoughts are not yours but from your parents, your teachers, your friends, the books, the movies, the television, the newspapers. Just count how many thoughts are your own, and you will be surprised that not a single thought is your own. We all know Krishna always holds a flute in his hand, there is a great story behind it ...
Everyday Krishna would go in the garden and say to all the plants, "I love you".


The plants were very happy and responded saying "Krishna,we love You too".


One day Krishna rushed quickly into the garden very alarmed.


He went to the bamboo plant and the bamboo plant asked,"Krishna, what´s wrong?"


Krishna said "I have something to ask you, but it is very difficult".


The bamboo said "Tell me: if I can, I will give it to you".

Very interesting Paradox

Many years ago, a Law teacher came across a student who was willing to learn but was unable to pay the fees. The student struck a deal saying, "I will pay your fee the day I win my first case in the court".

Teacher agreed and proceeded with the law course. When the course was finished and teacher started pestering the student to pay up the fee, the student reminded him of the deal and pushed days.

Fed up with this, the teacher decided to sue the student in the court of law and both of them decided to argue for themselves.

The teacher put forward his argument saying:
"If I win this case, as per the court of law, the student has to pay me as the case is about his non-payment of dues.
And if I lose the case, the student will still pay me because he would have won his first case...
So either way I will get the money".

Equally brilliant, the student argued back saying:
"If I win the case, as per the court of law, I don't have to pay anything to the teacher as the case is about my non-payment of dues.
And if I lose the case, I don't have to pay him because I haven't won my first case yet....
So either way, I am not going to pay the teacher anything".

This is one of the greatest paradoxes ever recorded.

Who is right and who is the winner?

This is part of ancient Greek history. The lawyer teacher was Protagoras (c.485-415 BCE) and the student was Euthalos. This is known as Protagoras's Paradox. This case was not solved. The most interesting part - this is still debated i(even today) in law schools as a logic problem!

I dreamed that I went to Heaven and an angel was showing me around. We walked side-by-side inside a large workroom filled with angels.

My angel guide stopped in front of the first section and said, 'This is the Receiving Section. Here, all petitions to God said in prayer are received.

I looked around in this area, and it was terribly busy with so many angels sorting out petitions written on voluminous paper sheets and scraps from people all over the world.

Then we moved on down a long corridor until we reached the second section.

The angel then said to me, "This is the Packaging and Delivery Section. Here, the graces and blessings the people asked for are processed and delivered to the living persons who asked for them."

I noticed again how busy it was there. There were many angels working hard at that station, since so many blessings had been requested and were being packaged for delivery to Earth.

Finally at the farthest end of the long corridor we stopped at the door of a very small station.

To my great surprise, only one angel was seated there, idly doing nothing. "This is the Acknowledgment Section, my angel friend quietly admitted to me. He seemed embarrassed.

"How is it that there is no work going on here? I asked."

"So sad," the angel sighed.

"After people receive the blessings that they asked for, very few send back acknowledgments."

"How does one acknowledge God's blessings? "I asked.

"Simple," the angel answered. Just say, "Thank you, Lord."
